I have become part of The 100 day project which calls artists and makers to post on Instagram their daily creations for one hundred days. I am not an artist or a maker but seeing as dance has been a part of my identity for the majority of my life I thought it might be fun to use the project as a pathway to re-connect with the ballerina inside of me. That being said- in the past 6 years I can honestly say I haven't done ANYTHING for seven days let alone one hundred! Of course my optimistic self quickly disregarded that fact, signed up and announced it publicly all within five minutes. Well it is day 4 and here are a few things that have already happened:
While filming the first dance sequence I was feeling really good about myself. Like the past 7 years of basically no dance classes hadn't happened and I was in competition form again!
Then I actually watched the video.
Then I realized I couldn't easily do my splits.
Then I woke up the next morning and I couldn't move my neck.
Then I couldn't come up with any content for my SECOND video.
Then I noticed very visible cellulite on the third video.
Then it started to sink in that this might be harder than I thought.
Then I took a big breath and somehow came across this important lesson about Systems Vs Goals:
"a goal is a specific objective that you either achieve or don't sometime in the future. A system is something you do on a regular basis that increases your odds of happiness in the long run.."
That bit is from a book called How to Fail at Almost Everything and Still Win Big by Scott Adams.
This applies to very big changes happening in my life which all require for a set of systems- daily habits that increase my happiness- instead of goals.
I know it sounds strange, we are all very goal oriented- but we have to ask ourselves, once we reach said goals then what?
A system has you constantly working to better your skills, it's purpose is to create habits. Systems are about your life- not the goals you pretend will bring you true happiness once reached.
These videos have made me think about my health and fitness more than all the phone conversations with my mom and her opinionated thoughts about my weight. It made me realize that this needs to be a system for my overall happiness. Dance makes me happy. Movement makes me fit. And fitness makes me think about eating better.
Overall a really good system to keep past this project ends.
Anyways if you would like to see my progress with this project, take a look at my Instagram feed.
If you would like to read more about Systems vs Goals- ready the book.
k.
bye.
